If It Ain't Scottish - It's Crap!
With a history dating to 1910, Highlander Beer from the Missoula Brewing Company returned as a Scottish Red Ale. Reintroduced in 2008 for the first time since 1964, Highlander beer recently won two awards at the 2009 Garden City Brewfest in Missoula, including the award for "Montanan's Best Beer." In Western Montana, look for it at a local pub or grocery store near you.
Bottles now available. Check your local store. You will find it a wonderfully flavorful and full bodied beer, reminiscent of the fine ales of Scotland, but with a Montana touch. Enjoy and Cheers!
Historically, Highlander Beer was a western style lager. After prohibition ended in the early 1930s, it was patterned after the most popular beer of the day, Olympia Beer. Yet, for its 21st Century revival, the beer was based on the recipe for a traditional Scottish Red Ale, in accord with the “Highlander” name and the company’s long history of using Scottish imagery in its marketing. The process to create the recipe was to start with one for a traditional red ale, but modify it for a unique brand with a western edge.
Highlander Beer is truly is an all season ale, rich and heavy enough for winter, but light enough to quench the deepest thirst of the summer. In addition to standing on its own, everyone agrees that Highlander Beer is fantastic with food, as it neither overpowers the sublime, nor fails to stand up to the spiciest sauté.
